Im building a computer for a friend. He purchased:

  • A refurbished Gigabyte gtx 770 GPU
    Asus m5a99x evo r2.0 motherboard
    AMD FX-9370 processor
    Corsair CX 750W PSU

The computer wont POST, and the beep codes suggest that the GPU is having an issue.
The mobo has these leds scattered around that indicate if something has gone haywire, and the vga_led is on. I've tried various things that others on toms hardware have tried, like tightening the CPU cooler screws and updating the BIOS. I've also been through the regular checklist of "no post no beeps" recommended by toms hardware. The GPU is seated firmly, and the pci-e cables are all plugged in.

The interesting thing is that his old gpu, a gt 630, works fine in the machine.
I hope that we wont have to go out and purchase another $300 gpu.....
Thanks for any and all replies!

Solution
Odd, it shouldn't have any issues - the 770 requires more power - I normally suggest a 600 w/ at least 42 AMPS while he 290 I go to 550/31 when running a base CPU

I cant try it in another pci-e slot, because the gpu is a monster and the case doesn't permit it fitting in any other slots, and I guess i could try it in my pc... id have to wait a bit for it though, my pc being at my house and his at his house!

That would suck.... I bought the 750w thinking it would be enough over his current 450w psu

Is the PSU the only possible problem? Also, I've ran the build through some online wattage calculators and they recommend like 700w. Are there any accurate calculators?

Your choices for the 9370:

ASRock 990FX Extreme9
Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z
Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0
Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7
MSI 990FXA-GD80V2

Warning: This power draw of this CPU is almost twice that of the average CPU. Due to this, AMD recommends using at minimum a 1000W power supply. For cooling, AMD recommends using either either closed loop liquid cooling or full system liquid cooling.

A decent 750W bronze rated power supply like the CX-750 is more than enough to get a stock FX-9370 and GTX 770 to post. That PC would use about 500-600W. Its like saying you can't OC a FX-8320/8350 to 4.4 Ghz on a 750W power supply (lol). Yeah, AMD recommends a 1000W power supply but they always play it safe to make allowances for the many crappy power supplies out there. There O.P.'s isn't one of them. As far as the motherboard goes, yes, its not officially supported but it physically indistinguishable from the M5A99FX Pro R2.0. Only difference is the two x16 PCI-E lanes in the Pro when using SLI or Crossfire. It should still work.

O.P., you are going to have to debug this by a process of elimination starting with the GPU first. Pull the card and try it in another PC. If that works try a different power supply in his PC (to assure the CX-750 isn't defective). If the result is the same look to the RAM, motherboard or CPU. Its not fun, but its the only way to track down a hardware problem.

O.P., you really need to debug this by the process of elimination and that means pulling that card and trying it in another machine. Failing that, try

Thanks for the reply! I will try booting the gpu in my machine, and if it works the motherboard should be in my crosshairs? Also, should I try undervolting the cpu to see if that would help it POST?

UPDATE: OK, so I tried the 770 in my machine and it worked fine. I put my R9 290 in his build and it didn't work. I tried all the pci slots through some case modding too. None of them work. I really am lost with this one at this point.

Undervolting the CPU won't really help, these things are pre OCed and set so they require the additional voltage draw, these were sort of a gimmick think so AMD could claim it had the 'fastest' supposed 'stock' CPUs available...they knew they wouldn't really do well, which is why they never sent any out (free) for prerelease review....then they hit the market at ungodly prices, and in head to head testing got beat by stock 4770Ks that at the time cost less than half the price of the AMD things

Well then. Good to know. That is the first time I've heard of intel beating amd over price, heh. I'm going to get his computer at my place today, I will report back to everybody the results.

Okay, so I tried the 770 in my machine, and it worked fine. I tried my r9 290 in his build and it didn't work. Yet the gt 630 always works. I also tried my old Phenom II x4 in his build, nothing different happened (POST with 630, no POST with 770). I'm really lost here, I'm thinking maybe the motherboard is defective.

Ok, update here. Fearing the motherboard was defective, I went to frys and got an Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0. I tried booting up, yet to no avail.... but that was with the gtx 770. My r9 290 works in it, and i just let my friend keep it, because the 770 works in my machine.

So it was the 770 that had issues with the 990 chipset (i guess?).
