Hello,
I am new to the forum but have read various threads about an issue similar to mine. I will try to summarize all of the issues my PC has been having for over a year. I recently had Windows 7 installed and the PC would boot up properly about 10% of the time, and the other 90% it would shut down abruptly during the "starting windows" screen. Upon shutting down, I would have to disconnect power to the PC before being able to try and start again. If I did not disconnect power, the PSU and fan LED lights would start flickering and the PC would not boot at all. It was almost like the computer was not getting enough current. When the PC did load windows successfully however, I could use the computer for hours without any power interruption. When I would shut down or reboot the computer manually, the same issues would persist.
To try and debug the problem, I updated my BIOS to the latest version and I also tried re installing Windows 7. I backed up my data, cleared any partitions and tried a fresh install, but the installer would shutdown abruptly during the "Completing Installation" stage. As a result, I am without any OS currently on my PC. This is a really frustrating issue and I am not sure if it can be resolved in software.
Things I've tried to Debug:
- Run the computer with only 1 RAM stick at a time
- Run the computer with only one hard drive installed, and tried installing Windows on differing Hard Drives
- Clear the computer of any dust
- Cleared the BIOS CMOS
- Update the BIOS Firmware
- Install Windows using only a PS/2 Input Keyboard
- Set all BIOS Settings to Default then install Windows 7
My specs:
-ASUS Striker Extreme motherboard
- Corsair 680W power supply
- NVIDIA 8800GT graphics card
- 2x 1GB Corsair DDR2 800 RAM
- 1 TB WD HDD (SATA)
- 256GB Seagate HDD (SATA)
- LG Optical Drive
- Floppy Drive
- Intel Core 2 Duo e6600 CPU
I've also replaced the stock fan on the CPU and GPU
Any insight in this problem would be GREATLY appreciated. It has been a big pain. I know this is an old PC but I do not have the money to purchase a new desktop. I am running a pretty weak laptop for school
