PC crashes randomly throughout the day

Hey,

I've been having this issue for quite some time and after attempting to replace some hardware which I hoped would fix the problem, it still exists.

Randomly throughout the day, my PC will crash or freeze onto the current screen. My mouse wont move, my keyboard does nothing it just holds on the screen until reset. It happens alot when I am watching a movie or television show, but can also happen at other times.

At first, I thought maybe it was a hard drive issue, but today I replaced my main harddrive with a 1 TB Samsung 840 EVO SSD and reformatted with Windows 8.1 64 bit (note that I was also receiving this issue on Windows 7). So now I am somewhat at a loss as to what the issue could be. My next step was to to my CPU and remove / replace the thermal compound but I figured it might be best to see if I can find insight on here.

I will admit, about a year and a half ago I spilled a glass of water onto my case and while I was very quick to turn it off and unplug it, I suspect this may be the cause. After the spill, I noted that most of the water did not get in contact with the motherboard, videocard or any other components that I could note (most of it went down the side of the case) but I took everything apart dried it all off and removed water stains with 99% rubbing alcohol, and allowed it to dry for about 2 days. Afterwards, I reassembled everything and the PC booted up just fine and this issue did not come up for atleast a few weeks (as far as I can recall). Since this incident, I have replaced the Video Card (because I needed a new one) and my hard drive. The motherboard, CPU and RAM are all the same.

I am posting in the motherboard section because it seems like it will be the most likely cause, but I hope not as it is also the most expensive to replace assuming I cannot find any good hardware to still work with my other components. I don't suspect it is the RAM as I am not getting any BSOD with the crash or at any other point.

Here are the specs:
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V Pro/Gen 3
CPU: Intel i7-2600k @ 3.4 GHz
RAM: 16GB DDR2 (not sure on the brand / model without removing)
GPU: ASUS MARS ROG 760x2
HD: Samsung 840 Evo 1 TB
OS: Windows 8.1 x64 - As noted earlier, I was also experiencing this issue on Windows 7

Thank you for taking the time to read my post, and I appreciate any insight you can provide as to the cause / solution of this issue.

Solution
Sounds like it could be the Ram or mobo. Try checking the Ram settings in the bios and making sure it's running at it's rated speeds and latency. :)

Hey, thanks for your response.

My PSU is a Corsair HX850W.
As for the BIOS, no I did not update the latest BIOS before switching to Windows 8.1, though I was still experiencing this issue in Windows 7 prior to updating.

A few more details I grabbed while I hand my case open:

RAM: Corsair G2 Series DDR3 1600 MHz
MOBO: ASUS P8Z68-V Pro (not Gen 3)
BIOS Version: 3603 - Nov 11th 2012

Something notable:

The BIOS was reset after unplugging my PC (It was off before I unplugged), I did not remove the battery or switch to the reset jumper (if there is one)

EDIT:
My current BIOS is the latest release.

The BIOS is already updated to the latest version. I've installed all of the drivers available for my motherboard on the ASUS website.

Thanks for your response Alex,

Checking in CPU-Z right now and the RAM is back at it's regular speeds. I think the 1300MHz that I was reading was from right after the BIOS reset itself, after switching back to Optimized mode, then running OC Tuner in BIOS the DRAM Frequency is 824.2 MHz +/- a few MHz. Though, I was experiencing crashes prior to running OC Tuner, so I do not believe this is the cause.

I am going to try to run memtest later tonight.
