Hi! I have a question .... i have a pentium D 3.2 ghz 940 class processor but it has 2 cores i also confirmed it through cpu z that it has 2 cores 2 threads... so does that make my cpu a dula core ..? plz tell me then how much processing speed my cpu processes?

Solution
Actually scratch that, since the Core i3 has Hyper Threading.

Your Pentium D 940 is equivalent to a current day Haswell generation dual core Pentium CPU running at about 1.8GHz. The different between a current Pentium and the Core i3 is that the Haswell generation Pentium lacks Hyper Threading.
Hi there.

Your CPU is a dual core, however it is a pretty old CPU released in 2005/2006, so its not really up to modern standards.
But all that aside, your question is difficult to answer since we don't know what you are really asking?

Do you have a problem with its performance?
What do you want your CPU to do?
What is it NOT good enough for you?

Your CPU is a Pentium D dual core. It is not a core 2 duo. The "core 2" architecture was the next generation after the Pentium D. Many of the Core 2 Duo CPU's are Pentium "E"'s. Notice the next letter in the alphabet? A precious few motherboard's that run Pentium D CPU's will also run Core 2 CPU's. The step from Pentium D to Core 2 was one of the most dramatic changes ever in CPU architecture. A Core 2 is WAY WAY WAY better than a Pentium D. They are much faster (even though mostly clocked slower). Much Much cooler and less power hungry. Your question is probably "can I upgrade my Pentium D CPU to a CORE 2 Duo?" I would need to know what Motherboard/chipset and or model of computer you have. Also, depending on the brand and model of your computer you MAY be able to upgrade the CPU and Motherboard for very very little money. Some Pentium D PC's can have the motherboard and cpu upgraded for around $25 and another $10 or so for the corresponding front i/o panel/switch. Let me know what you have and I will advise further.

I have a problem with its performance i want to ask u guys that can my computer run dual core games ... for instance max payne 3 minimum requirements says dual core 2.4 ghz... can my cpu run it
The site game_ debate .com have the system where we can check whether our cpu can run the required games but it dont have the option of pentium d dual core just dual core so .... again ...
Is my cpu processing speed equal to a celeron dual core?

Pentium D CPU woefully inadequate for any demanding modern games. They were basically dual core pentium 4 CPU's. The generation of intel cpu's AFTER the Pentium D was heralded as the greatest leap forward for CPU technology since the original pentium. The generation after the Pentium D is called CORE 2 architecture. The popular CPU's of that generation were the Core 2 Duo's. CPU's have progressed 7 generations since the original Core 2 CPU's. If you still have a Pentium D CPU, your system is not adequate for modern computing.

Compared to a modern day Haswell Core i3 CPU I estimate that your Pentium D 940 is equivalent to a Core i3 running at 1.8GHz. That is an estimate based on average performance increase of each CPU generation Intel has released after they abandoned the Pentium 4 architecture.

Even less, maybe a Haswel Pentium @ 1.8GHz with a quarter of the cache...

Are you kidding? A pentium D has a passmark score of about 300 an i3 has a passmark score of about 1500. Pentium D's are old, crap. Don't mislead this guy.

Check this out if you think it is as good as an i3:

Reasons to consider the
Intel Core i3 2120

Newer manufacturing process 32 nms vs 65 nms A newer manufacturing process allows for a more powerful, yet cooler running processor
Is hyperthreaded Yes vs No Somewhat common; Maximizes usage of each CPU core
Has a built-in GPU Yes vs No Somewhat common; A separate graphics adapter is not required
Higher clock speed 3.3 GHz vs 2.8 GHz Around 20% higher clock speed
Has vitualization support Yes vs No Somewhat common; Boosts performance of virtual machines
Much better PassMark (Single core) score 1,680 vs 656 More than 2.5x better PassMark (Single core) score
Better PassMark score 3,873 vs 599 Around 6.5x better PassMark score
More threads 4 vs 2 Twice as many threads
Lower typical power consumption 52.81W vs 77.19W More than 30% lower typical power consumption
Marginally newer Jan, 2011 vs Jul, 2006 Release date over 4 years later
Significantly better performance per watt 9.2 pt/W vs 1.02 pt/W More than 9x better performance per watt
Significantly higher Maximum Operating Temperature 69.1 °C vs 63.4 °C Around 10% higher Maximum Operating Temperature
Lower annual commercial energy cost 56.94 $/year vs 83.22 $/year More than 30% lower annual commercial energy cost
Lower annual home energy cost 15.66 $/year vs 22.89 $/year More than 30% lower annual home energy cost
Notice the Passmark score. 599 for the Pentium D and 3850 for the i3. That means in practical use the i3 is over 6 times more powerful the Pentium D. Pentium D cpu's are barely good enough to surf the web.

Passmark means nothing. Purely synthetic.

Try not to argue with people that have been on Toms a lot longer than you have... THanks.

moiz, why are you asking this question? As far as the functionality of a Pentium D CPU, If all you do is word processing and surfing the net even a Pentium 3 will work. But if you are going to compare it to a modern CPU it is obsolete. Even when Pentium D CPU's were new they were woefully inferior to the AMD CPU's of their generation. The release of the Core 2 CPU's which came after the Pentium D's were seen as astonishing compared to them. They used far far less power and hence ran much cooler and were Far Far faster. Even a 1.8Ghz Pentium Core 2 Duo was faster than a 3.4 GHZ Pentium D. And now the i3 CPU's are faster than the fastest Core 2 CPU's. The landfills are full of Pentium D computers. With that said, depending on the make and model of your computer it may be a very very cheap upgrade to a Core 2 CPU which are still useable. I have been upgrading Dell Optiplex and Dimension PC's with Pentium D CPU's to Core 2 PC's for $20 to $60. That would be from a Pentium D to an Intel Core 2 3GHZ for $25.

I have a pentium D and let me tell you it is nothing like a haswell pentium at 1.8 ghz. Its probably weaker than a 500mhz haswell in a lot of things.

Pentium D -> core 2 first gen was a 60 - 100% increase in IPC
core 2 first gen to core 2 on 45nm 15 - 20% IPC
core 2 45nm -> sandybridge was 20 - 30% IPC
sandy to haswell was 15-20% IPC

That means, its been like a 2.5x-4x increase in IPC since pentium D to haswell. This means a 3.2GHz pentium D would be about as powerful as a 800-1.3 ghz haswell in programs using none of the new instruction sets. The passmark was closer than your estimates.

Edit: I just remembered running cinebench on the pentiumD 3.6ghz and it was a 0.67 in multithreaded.
http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/6513/intel-pentium-g3258-haswell-20th-anniversary-edition-cpu-performance/index4.html
shows the haswell pentiums getting 2.75 at stock. Thats a 4.1x increase in performance and 4.6x increase in IPC. This would mean in cinebench, the pentium D is only equal to a 780mhz haswell pentium.

Guys Guys Guys... relax lol
Its true i have a pentium D but it is also a dual core dont forget .... it should have more processing speed then those old pentium Ds :p

I have recently used a Pentium D. In a Dell 5110 or something. A BTX board machine. 3.4 GHz cpu. 4 gigs of ram. I installed Windows 7 and Linux Mint. After only a few minutes of futility I put the machine on the curb in front of my house. That is how usable a Pentium D is. It was slow even in 2006. It was about as responsive as molasses on a cold day.
