Skype isn't going to write much data...

The write issue has been blown massively out of proportion. What about all those ultrabooks with no HDD?

I'm not sure why you're worrying about things being written to your SSD - while it is true that SSDs have a more specific lifespan than HDs, they will still last good and well - if your 840 Evo is your system drive, which it should be as that is what it's best used for, then Windows and other apps will be writing all sorts of temporary files to it all the time, and this is no problem

Stop worrying about it and let your computer save things where it wants...

I'm actually not entirely sure of the TBWs of the EVO series (I know the 850 pro is 150 TBWs), but anyway, you shouldn't really worry about writes anymore. That was really more of a concern with the first and second generation of SSDs. SSDs in current generations have very good endurance. Other components in your computer will probably die before the SSD would. Also, skype probably doesn't write that much to the SSD in the first place. We're talking it's going to take Terabytes of data to kill it. I don't think it will be an issue for skype to write a few kilobytes to your hard drive. Unless you are doing professional work that requires constant writing to your SSD, you should be fine just doing basic tasks. Even installing/removing games a lot on an SSD would still take quite a bit of time to kill it. To put it in perspective, one of the SSDs I use most and have had for about 2 years (samsung 840 pro) has only about 15TB written to it. And, I installed a lot of games on it and such and removed them ect.

I think it's something like 1k P/E cycles, which would be 250TB for the 250GB drive.

Wear levelling makes writes not an issue.

which would equate to a millennia of Skyping. By the time it wears out, we'll have evolved into something else.

More like 1000.

You'd be hard pressed to reach that in under two decades unless you were deliberately trying.

No. There's plenty of reads.

Remember that's 1k writes per cell.

1k = 1000.

Every cell in the SSD can be written to about 1000 times.

Do not stress over 'writes to the SSD'.
You will either replace it for something larger/newer long before it dies due to too many writes. Skype or no Skype.
