Hello Guys,

I'm new in tom's hardware, and I've seen a lot of topics with AMD overheating issues, but there are many suggestions and I'm little bit confused with what suggestions that I should follow or what should I do. I'm looking forward to clarify some of my doubts here.

Forgive me if I should not create this topic here or If I'm creating wrong, but I new here and I really need help with this.

I will summarize in topics.

- Issue:
I have this PC for 2 years. About 3 days ago my PC started to shut down for now reason ( like when some turn-off pulling the cable out of the wall plug) when I try to play some games like CS:GO, Battlefield 4, League Of Legends. But it is not a constant event, some days the PC turns off several times (2 mins playing CS:GO it turned off 5 times in row), but some times the PC does not turn off and I can play these games for hours. Using the PC for things like watching videos or use the web the PC looks fine it does not turns off.

- Hardware:
Processor: Bulldozer FX 8150 Octa Core 3.6GHz 16MB AM3+
Memory: Patriot Gamer 2 Division 4 16GB (4GBX4GB) 1600mHZ
Power Supply Unit: Corsair ATX 650W
Video Graphic Card: XFX ATI Radeon HD 7950 3072MB (3GB) DDR5 PCI-Express
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+
Chassis: Armor+ MX

- Temperature:
I have some monitoring program instaled in my computer (AIDA64 and Speecy) to see the temperatures of the components. And the idle temperature looks fine.

Idle:
CPU: arround 35 - 40 C
VGA(Video Graphic Card): arround 32 - 35 C
Motherboard: arround 28 - 29 C

Then I have perfomed a test stress using AIDA64 (for about 1 min):
CPU: goes abour 85 C (when the PC turns off)
Motherboard: 32 C
VGA(Video Graphic Card): goes to 55 - 60 C

- Coolers:
Armor+ MX: I have perfomed a clean up of the coolers of my chassis(Armor+ MX) cleaned all the dust and used some lubrificant to make them spin correctly with the same speed again. But I didn't touched the CPU cooler or the Graphics card coolers to clean up. (maybe can be that that is making the overheating(I'm not sure).

- Additional Information:
I will perform a clean up on the processor cooler today and also add a new thermal paste (I bought one from thermaltake) But I'm not sure if that will help.

- My questions:
1. Cleaning the CPU cooler and adding a new thermal paste should resolve this heating issue?

2. I didn't have any overheating issue in two years(time that I have this PC), now that I'm having one, can my CPU be damaged?

3. If the cleaning in the CPU cooler does not solve the overheating issue should I change the CPU cooler? If I need to change it they recommended Cooler CoolerMaster Hyper TX3 EVO. Is it good?

4 I readed about some BIOS configuration / voltage can this be an issue too? Someone help me with this?

5, Shutting down for no reason made me wonder could it be CPU, the video card or even the PSU. Can they be related?

- Ending:
Thanks for your help in this topic. Also sorry for my bad english, I hope you guys understand what I tried to say in this topic.

I can post some pictures of m PC later (when I got home if it helps).

Also as I said I'm not an expert on PC (Hardware knowlage and configurations).

Hope to hear from you soon :)

Thanks for your help.

Your PSU seems fine, since it's in Tier 2 Class A (which is a good thing. Check this: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1804779/power-supply-unit-tier-list.html ) Your case has 2 intake and an exhaust fan so that's good too. Did the stock cooler give you outrageous temps in the last two years? Have you ever checked the temps in the past two years. If it didn't give you problems back then, then you may want to clean the cooler and CPU and add better thermal paste since it may be worn out. I would recommend Arctic Silver MX-5, it seems to be good.

Are you using the stock cooler? Well, you shouldn't be since I heard that AMD's stock coolers are terrible, and when matched with one of their hottest CPUs...
You should have gotten the TX3 or the 212 EVO or something alike in the first place. Does your case have good airflow? Like an intake fan to pull in fresh air and an exhaust fan to push out hot air? If not, the hot air circulation will also cause components to overheat. Also, can you specify what model of Corsair PSU it is? Is it from the CX series? If so, those aren't good quality and may be causing your PC to shut down.

Yes I'm using the cooler which came with the processor. Also I didn't knew that I shouldn't use once that it have worked for two years. =/

Regarding the coolers I belive they are working as they should. As I can see on the following link:

The PSU are from the TX series as described in the following link:

That's good to hear!

I don't remember of having temperature issues. It was always about 50 C, the truth is that even with the monitoring programs the temperature didn't cought my attention on this last 2 years because I didn't have a problem with it so i didn't kept tracking the temperature daily. About the thermal paste I got a Thermaltake TG-2(the only one that they got in the store near here.) But I'm planning to get one of these MX-5 but I don't know when they will be available. MX-2, MX-4 are they worth of buying?

Thanks for the tip. I will see if I can get an MX-4. I will update you guys when I have done the cleaning in the CPU cooler.

Thanks!

Hey there, finally I have cleaned all my PC and here are some photos and the results achived.

Cleaning the fan, and also adding new thermal paste seems to have worked for now.

I have perfomed a stress test in AIDA64 and my CPU stays at 64 C - 67C performed the test for about 5 minutes. At least is not going yo 84 in 50 secs :D.

I will post the pictures of my CPU before and after cleaning.
