2 monitors with different resolutions ?

Is it possible to use my old 1440x900 as secondary monitor with my current 1920x1080 ? If it is will my GPU use extra resources to scale to that resolution other monitor ?

And should I use my primary monitor for gaming with HDMI or VGA cable ?
