Hey all,

I am hoping that there is some networking genius out there who can help me with this problem b/c boy do I need it!

So here is my problem: I have a modem > router (with WiFi) > switch setup, but nothing behind the switch is receiving an IPv4 address from the router and thus has no access to the internet.

Here is my hardware:

Modem: Surfboard SB6141
Router: Netgear N600 (WNDR3400v2)
Switch: Netgear 24-Port Gigabit Ethernet Plus Switch (JGS524E)

Here are my preliminary diagnostics:

1) I have internet access and can connect devices to the router via WiFi from the router and from all 4 ports on the back of the router. As such, DHCP seems to be working just fine. My conclusion on this is that the router works fine as a standalone unit, so something must be wrong with the switch.

2) I have checked all the ethernet cords (CAT5) that I am using to connect devices. All work properly and all are less than 2 ft. long.

3) The switch, while it is supposed to be plug & play, came with a configuration CD. I have installed on computers both in front of and behind the switch. However, when I launch the program on either computer, it says "No switches found on this local area network!".

4) I have reset the router to factory settings and tried it again. No dice.

5) I have switched the router out for another router (same model). Same exact problem again.

6) I tried assigning static IPs to computers behind the switch. No dice.

7) I have restarted all devices in every order possible. No dice.

8) Called Netgear support. They confirmed that it should be plug & play with my setup and admitted that they could not think of any reason for this to not work. I will be connecting with them later for one of their staff to remotely connect to a laptop that will be plugged into the switch to do a more in-depth hardware analysis.

9) I have called my ISP (Bright House) just to 100% confirm that nothing on their end could be causing this problem. As expected, there wasn't.

Here is the real kicker:

I bought this new switch for one reason, to fix this exact same problem that occurred on my old switch. The old switch started acting up about 4 days ago after 3 years of working fine. Nobody seems to have any clue why it stopped working or why the new switch won't work as intended which is why I am reaching out to the people of the internet. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

PS:

My next steps are as follows ad I will let you all know the results.

1) Try the switch on a friend's home network to see if it works there.
2) Buy a new router (different model) and see if it works on my network.
3) Continue to follow up with Netgear on this router-switch connection problem, especially since both are their products.

Is your switch configured to act as a DHCP server? If so, disable that in the switch (page 18, see below).

Also, see page 9 of the switch utility manual. Your anti-virus program could be blocking your setup utility:

Your router seems to be working correctly. I would not spend money replacing it. Have you tried to reset your switch to factory defaults? Also you said you checked all CAT5 cables to your devices. Have you tried replacing the cable between the router and switch? Also you can try to connect a simple, cheap unmanaged switch to the router to see if it works. That would cost like $10 but it would tell you for sure if the problem is your switch, router, or cable. Example: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FNFSPY/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_n...

Of course taking your switch to a friends house and trying it can also help narrow down the problem.

Thank you for the speedy reply!

It turns out that some of the executables required for the switch configuration software to work had to be activated in Windows 7 compatibility mode.

So I am now able to see the switch via the computer software. Here are the settings that I see: https://www.flickr.com/photos/125713972@N03/14767881832...

As you can see DHCP is off so I am not sure what is going on.

The only thing that I am seeing that looks a little weird is that the IP and Gateway are saying 192.168.0.*** when my router and the rest of the network is on 192.168.1.***. Could this be causing problems?

Yes, they are on different network segments. That is causing the issue.

It turns out that the switch had a software defect in which the DHCP assignments were assigning the switch an IP subnet that was not connected to my router's subnet. I ended up spending about 3 hours with Netgear support, and we tried all sorts of things to manually change that assignment, but nothing would work. Ended up returning it for a replacement switch that I was able to set up with no problems in ~ 2 minutes.

Thank you all for your help.
