I'm having some problems with my XFX 280X, I tried to play minecraft with shaders and the fps was about 30-40, 70-150fps while not using shaders
which is outperformed by my older gtx 660. And the screen was too saturated, i tried to fix it but nothing worked. also the XFX 280X is supposed to be alot more powerful than the gtx 660.I think my psu is not powerful enough, Silverstone st70 (700watt)
specs:
cpu intel core i5 4440
gpu xfx radeon r9 280x
ram g skill ripjawsX 8x2 1600
Psu Silverstone st70

Your problem sounds perfectly normal. I have an overclocked r9 290 and I get similar FPS with shaders on Minecraft, and 500+ (according to Afterburner's monitors) without.

It's all about optimization, and for some odd reason, the old series of cards perform better. Out of my HD 6850, HD 7970, and R9 290, the HD 6850 got the best FPS.

So I wouldn't worry too much, just wait for patches in both Minecraft and drivers, and eventually performance should stable out.
