In the vSphere Web Client a Virtual Machine's console won't launch. No errors. No big deal I can troubleshoot that. However, the preview of the desktop is what confuses me.

Usually when viewing a VM's Summary in vCenter, there is a preview of what the VM is displaying. Instead there's a picture/icon with a ripped/broken piece of paper? Usually when the VM isn't working for whatever reason it will show plain black desktop or the off display. Expand "Spoiler" for screenshots below.

This has left me stumped. Obviously something is wrong with the VM but, this picture throws me off as I've never seen it before and I can't find an explination online. To reiterate, when a VM isn't working as intended it will show a black desktop or similar.

Does anyone know exactly what that icon/picture is supposed to mean? VMware has no details for me about their own icons...

Getting this picture.

I have no idea. The only thing that I can think of is that the VM is either in an incompatible graphical state (this can happen during startup I think) or the VMM can't communicate with the VM over the VMBus. Those are total guesses though. I would recommend asking over at the VMWare community forums, one of their engineers may be able to assist you better
