Hi, I just got a dell dimension 4600 from a friend but when I got home and turned it on, it won't boot windows XP during the load screen it freezes then reboots itself and says it couldn't boot XP and only can go into safe mode, I did msconfig and unchecked the stuff that wasn't needed to boot but now I cannot boot into safe mod anymore it loads the drivers then it hangs on the screen and never goes into safe mode. I also got a NV4 disp problem (what?) can someone tell me what I should do? can I reinstall windows XP and fix the problems?

Before you messed with msconfig and safe mode worked, it was simply a third-party driver problem - the NVIDIA graphics driver to be specific, the fix for that is here: http://www.christopherjason.com/personal-computing/nvid...

As of now however, it's more than just a driver issue, you made it worse by meddling outside of your knowledge zone.

Have you tried "Last known good configuration" if safe mode no longer works (it's in the same startup menu)?

Failing that, a reinstall of Windows will get you out of the sh*t if you are able to do that with a legal copy and Product Key.

Yeah I finally was able to fix the problem with it booting into safe mode, I am going to reinstall everything and I just hope this disc drive works on the damned thing.
Last known config does the same thing as if I were to boot it regularly no dice.

Just one more question if I may? can you install windows XP through a flash drive instead of a disc? I so have a copy of it on there but no clue how to use it on there.
