recently i was looking at some cheap combo kits that are in my budget right now and i was routed to a Pentium G3258 with a MSI Z97 mobo and 8GB of Crucial Ballistics DDR3 1600 ram. i was told that i would have to overclock this and work it in and probably hit an OC of 4.2-4.5GHz in order to run World of Warcraft with minimal Lag to 0 lag at all on medium to high settings as well as other games. Currently WoW only uses 2 cores and minimum of 4gb of ram so i know the 8gb will be sufficient enough for just running that application with Vent teamspeak or mumble as well for when i raid. my main concern is Overclocking i have had some back experiences with it in the past even with good aftermarket coolers on it i have had a bad time.

If there is anyone out there who uses this CPU for World of Warcraft or even uses this CPU currently without OverClocking it can someone let me know if its a good sturdy reliable CPU or is it a MUST to overclock it in order for it to be potentially good. i know the CPU is Cheap running at only 70 bucks but i was curiuos being its Intel and Not AMD and a lot of Gamers Choose Intel over AMD.. so any information on this as to if it would do its justice and not have to be Overclocked and still run amazing FPS and not cause lag issues with it not being over clocked would be great help to me.

The 3258 is a highly efficient processor, based on the haswell architecture and unlocked for very easy overclocking. This chip, when properly overclocked with an aftermarket cooler, can rival an i5 in terms of single-threaded applications (AKA most games).

Basically, to answer your question, this thing can run WoW maxed or nearly maxed, depending on how far you want to push the overclock. Choosing to not overclock this chip would leave you with okayish performance,. but you would be missing out on a ton of free potential.

well the reason im going this route with this CPU and Combo deal is being my old PC just took a shit on me and i am strapped for cash in the building a new Rig area. and i saw a combo deal with this CPU Ram and Z97 Mobo and ppl were telling me that it is a decent CPU if i can get someone to OC for me since i normally dont do OCing my self. and i was told that if OC properly i can reach roughly a comfortable 4.3-4.5GHz and it would be in comparison to the current i5s that are out and would even give them a run for their money for as cheap as this CPU is. mainly im not looking to do all this bunched up mumbo jumbo from when i wrecked my old PC by live streaming having multiple windows open and multiple apps with mumble ts and vent running when i was dual boxing and what not and really putting a beating on my pc.. im just looking for a current pick me up combo that will last me for atleast a year or 2 until i can save up and build a great gaming rig. this is just a temporary build but something that i need to be able to run atleast like a 25man raid as well as 20mans when the new expac hits. but im sure it wouldnt be too hard to learn how to OC this CPU or even find someone around here that can OC it for me and get it to its happy place for OC. i was just wondering if this CPU would be a sturdy CPU to buy being i found the combo deal of a Z97 MSI Mobo 8gb ram and this CPU for 235 bucks

The i3 and oc'd g3258 are basically the same in Wow. It would be about $50 more than the g3258 for the i3 4150 (which I think is the best value i3). Depending on various factors, the g3258 can OC pretty well on the stock cooler. Certain cheaper mobo's enable overclocking, not just the z97. Though the z97 is what I went with, for later purchase of either an i5 4690k or future Broadwell K cpu.

How bad would it be if i were to buy this combo and after installing wow and running it and if it runs just fine on medium settings without the use of Overclocking, how bad would it be down the road say a few months if i in turn wanted to take it somewhere to get Overclocked. would it still be ok to do or is Overclocking something you have to do right away before the CPU gets used too much or puts too much wear on it??

well thats the thing i intend on using this mobo down the road when i replace the CPU being i got laid off of work i am just looking at what i would have to replace later down the road i mean i figured this board might be good for a couple years being i have a R9 270x GPU that ill be putting in, so i figured maybe after like 2 years all id have to replace would be the CPU and maybe the GPU but i could be wrong maybe id have to replace the MOBO as well

Overcloking can be done at any point, if you're a happy with the performance at stock levels, you can by all means leave it there. If you decide you need some more performance later, then go for it. You can also do some very simple Auto-Overclock settings, which aren't as efficient as a manual overclock, but should still offer a significant performance boost.

right on ya i have never personally overclocked a computer before i have always just built them but i have been out of the building game for about 10 years now lol so im a bit out in the woods on the new parts and what not but i still know how to do it lol just not the overclocking but once i get this system ill take a look and hopefully i can find someone to OC it if the stock performance isnt cutting it. so in your opinion you are saying that this CPU and Mobo and ram kit would be a good Combo to buy for the price and then OverClocking her should make it run like it was an i5 CPU? so id be better off OverClocking it right after i get it then to make it to where i can run on high to ultra settings depening on the OC State of it

The combo deal sounds good to me, depending on the price. It shouldn't cost too much to have somebody overclock it for you if you're not comfortable with it, it's just a multitude of settings, steps, and stress-tests to get it to run stable and efficiently.

ya the combo total is 235.99 with free shipping and people are saying that the CPU will match the i5 if not beat it if properly overclocked i was just hoping i wouldnt have to overclock it since i dont know how to and i live in a small country place where its hard to find ppl to do it properly lol.. but im sure i can find someone to do it around here if the cpu will survive for atleast a year to 2 years tops before i have to replace it and doing some research everyone is saying the MSI Z97 is a good board and wont have to be replaced down the road for atleast 3 years
