I want to buy a laptop. I need opinion from someone that actually has the hardware
Are these SSH something?
Are they performing better than a normal HDD. I mean are those 8gb ssd making the system run smoother.

More about : ssd ssh hdd performance

I am assuming you have a degree in computer science - possibly with a minor in physics and/or math.

the hybrid hard drives are an attempt to create what is essentially a cache for hard drive contents. (it's a bit more than that - but it works for this explaination.)

By providing frequently used data in the Solid State portion and predicitng what to pull from the HD into the Solid State portion - performance gains can be realized.

It is the same concept used with CPUs where the L1 cache is small but fast, L2 is larger but slower, L3 is larger yet but even slower. By creating these tiers, read ahead and predictive loading are possible - all creating faster transactions.

From your Comp Sci background, magnetic storage is the slowest component of a computer system (if you ignore the user.) By speeding things up on this area, the rest of the system reacts much more efficiently.

Yes i mostly figured that those 8gb ssd work same as the 32/64mb buffer traditional HDD has.
But i wanted to know if IRL is any gain. Its a actually tangible performance gain or is just marketing babbling?

After a few reboots windows will definitely load faster as well as several frequently used apps. 8gb doesnt hold much so that about all you get. After the 8gb cache you are left with a regular HDD and whatever speed is native to it.

I wish they still made the 7200rpm 2.5" sshd.

I probably should mention that WD has one out now too that uses a different approach which gives you two physical drives in one package to let you manage the ssd data yourself.
