Change resolution to 1400x900

I have a 1400x900 Compaq WF1907 monitor that I use with my laptop. I want to change my resolution to the recommended 1400x900 but I cannot find a resolution larger than the laptop's default 1366x768, even when I go to Advanced Settings>List All Modes. How can I change the resolution to 1400x900?

This depends on your operating system. On Windows, if you set your external monitor as second monitor / extended desktop mode (that is, not to mirror the laptop screen), you can setup both resolutions independently.

Make sure you have the right monitor driver installed not the default one that comes with windows.

Right-click on the desktop, "Personalize", "Display", "Adjust resolution".
From here, you should see two displays - one for your Laptop screen, one for the external display,

If you have the displays cloned, it won't let you adjust the resolution independently. Set the display to Extend.

BTW the monitor resolution is 1440x900 not 1400

I set it to extend and now it's not connected to the monitor anymore. I need to have the displays cloned since my laptop's screen is busted, how can I set it back to the displays being cloned without the need to look at the laptop's screen?

You should have started with the fact that you want Cloned mode.

As for switching - check your laptop' keyboard for special key, or try standard "<Windows key> P", then press right arrow key once, then <Enter>

You want to set a single display and have it show only on the external. Go to the video options, set the external monitor as the main monitor and then set it to show only on that screen.

Each time I press the menu button on the monitor it just goes back to sleep
