PC won't respond after Windows Update

I built this computer more than a month ago, and it runs fine. I haven't installed any programs that could cause viruses, most things are Chrome, component drivers, Sony Vegas, etc. It worked beautifully for this month! Well I decided it was wise to run Windows Update because there was 1 important update pending. So I did, and while it downloaded I went to sleep. Now I came to use it and the "ON" light was on, but the fans were off and there was nothing on the screen. I unplugged the HDMI cable, switched inputs, etc. but nothing seemed to work. I pressed the keyboard and mouse, and it made a sound it always does when it comes back from sleep mode, which includes the procedure of turning on the fans. The fans didn't come on. So I tried pressing the power button to power it off. But no matter how much time I hold it, the light is still on and the computer theoretically won't turn off. So I plugged it out of the outlet, and it did turn off, obviously. But when I plug it back in, it turns on alone. Now I tried it again and it didn't turn on alone. I turned it on myself, but there was no difference. The ON light showed up, and yeah.
do???
Now the ON light is not lit, and the only response I have is from the optical drive, which opens and closes. Other than that, there is a light on the GPU and on the motherboard. What happened? What do i do??

Solution

First try disconnecting the power cord from the wall outlet, then disconnect all power cables coming from the power supply to the motherboard, GPU, disk drives, etc... once everything is disconnected press the power button like 10 times, then hold it in for 20 seconds and release (nothing will happen of course, everything is disconnected). Then reconnect all power connectors, followed by peripherals (hook up your VGA monitor instead of TV), then plug it into the wall outlet and let it sit for a few minutes. Finally, try to power it...

I would open it up, disconnect everything that is not necessary to boot to bios and try to boot it to the bios. If that is successful, add components one at a time until it starts messing up again. Start with one stick of ram, then two, then add the DVD, then the hdd, you get the picture. But start with resetting the bios like lantrich suggested. A lot of times just re-seating components will clear up problems like that. Oh, and if you have an onboard graphics chip, also disconnect the graphics card and use the onboard video when you try disconnecting everything. Let us know how it turns out.

Find the jumper on the motherboard. It is usually near the cmos battery. It will be a jumper where there are 3 pins with it covering 2 of the three. With your computer off and unplugged move the jumper to the other 2 pins for a minute or so, then move it back and turn the computer back on. It will reset all of your bios settings. The time and date all the settings etc will have to be set again. I will look up your motherboard to see exactly where the clear cmos jumper is.

Hans, I tried doing the CMOS reset and the fans started working, just like they should. But nothing shows up on the screen. I talked to a PC repair guy and he told me to get a monitor and use VGA, I'm using a TV at HDMI, does this make any difference?

Did you get it to boot to bios? Did you get a monitor and vga cable? I don't know what motherboard you have but most motherboards have a place where you select the primary video. BUT, most likely if you have it running with a monitor, then just plug in the hdmi with the tv and it will recognize it. You may have corrupted some windows files when it was not booting properly but you shouldn't have to re-install windows.

My monitor arrives today. MB is Asus Z97-K. So plug it in with VGA, select primary video and I'm good?
About Windows, I shouldn't have to reinstall it, at most pop in the Windows Install DVD and use the Repair function?
I'm calling Microsoft soon to get this solved, if I can't update my computer then how am I supposed to make it work properly?
I got a BSOD before when it rebooted during a Windows Update, the American Megatrends screen showed up, and something about the CPU Fan showed up. I rebooted it, went into the BIOS and it looked like it was functioning properly. I didn't have any problems with it after that. Only this.

Are you able to make it to the windows desktop or does it get stuck at POST? It's unclear to me exactly what it's doing at the moment, have you received the new monitor and tried it yet? (even though I doubt that will help based on the issues you're describing)

It seems to me that these are the issues you are dealing with: 1) you cannot get the computer to show any video on your hdmi/tv setup. 2)since you reset the bios the fans come on but still no video. And you have not gotten any further than that, correct? From this it would seem that you have an issue that is coincidental to the windows update. It seems possible to me that when you fell asleep while it was updating, the pc went into hibernation and somehow it messed it up when you tried various things to get it to come of hibernation. If these things are true, and now it appears that it is running without video, the first step is to see if a normal monitor\vga cord will give you any video.

Exactly. I didn't unplug the stuff and plug them back in one by one because the CMOS reset worked, by the way. I'll get it soon, but might just be able to test it tomorrow morning, I don't know. I'll update you guys once I get past this.

Just for no confusion, the BSOD happened around 3 weeks ago, it was about the CPU Fan not working properly, after research I discovered the computer launches a BSOD when the CPU fan goes under a preset RPM. That was the reason over all that.

No, no. The BSOD happened 3 weeks ago and has nothing to do with my current problem. The BSOD was just a warning regarding the CPU fan, which went under a preset RPM factory-set by the motherboard. So they threw this. When I rebooted it, I managed to get to the Windows desktop with no problem. Again, it was just a warning and not a hardware failure. And it has nothing to do

Read what Hans just wrote. My video does not work (HDMI to TV), but the fans worked after I did the CMOS reset. I'll hook up my computer via VGA once my monitor arrives. But so far, that's all I have.

Then reconnect all power connectors, followed by peripherals (hook up your VGA monitor instead of TV), then plug it into the wall outlet and let it sit for a few minutes. Finally, try to power it on and report back what all comes on (fans, LED's, etc)

edit: before doing this you'll probably want to put the memory sticks back into the original positions if they're not already there

THANK YOU!! I did that, and the fans started working. CPU fan took a while to spin, but its spinning good now. Then I plugged the VGA cable to the GPU's output and the American Megatrends screen showed up. What a moment of joy! I got in the BIOS and everything was looking good. Adjusted the time, that was wrong because of CMOS reset. Rebooted alone into Windows, and the keyboard looked like it wasn't working, but it was just some lag. It started working, typed in my password and it works great. Speakers worked after plugging them in again in the USB port. Other than that, perfect! Thank you so much!
Should I update a pending nVidia GeForce driver? I'm afraid it can crash again.

Also thanks Hans! You rock!!!
