Upgrading AMD System, is the right time?

I currently have an ASUS M4A87TD / AMD Phenom II X4 BE 955 / Radeon HD 6870 system and I use the computer for mid-end gaming. I want an update to be able to handle most graphics intensive titles and make it future proof for aprox. 3 years which is what I got for my current setup (@1680x1050)

As I have a very restricted budget, I was planning on jumping to a GA-990FXA-UD5 / Vishera FX X8 8350 BE / Radeon R9 280X setup... but it just doesn´t feel as though I'm taking that big of a jump. Is it possible it might be wise to wait for a while before upgrading? If so, what should I wait for?

EDIT: Chose the UD3 and an XFX Black Edition as they were cheaper and offered the same performance for what I need

Thanks!

That looks like a decent upgrade to me. You would have to wait at least another 12 to 18 months for another high end CPU from AMD. Nevertheless, the 8350 was way ahead of its time anyway (like most high-end CPUs). It will last for the next 3 years easy. The best part about that mobo is that is has dual x16 pcie lanes. Which means in another year or two, you could just get another 280x (or 380x or 480x, depending on how many years from now lol).

Seriously, the 8350 will only get faster and better as games utilize more of CPUs power. The software is just now catching up to the hardware, and the 8350 will serve you well in gaming and literally ALL other computer tasks.

Thanks! I think I'll change the UD5 for the UD3 as Outlander recommends and also change the Toxic for the XFX Black Edition which I can get for much cheaper!

Those parts are a very nice jump over what you currently have, I would highly recommend getting a better monitor also. At your current resolution the 280x is overkill, and even at 1080p you would probably be fine with the R9 280 (non x edition). Either one is good but I personally wouldn't grab the 280x unless you plan on upgrading your resolution as well.
