Really..Another one of these questions...

Nothing is future proof..stuff always changes, improves.

Future proof is what you make of it..if you're happy with what its performance is for what you need it for..then thats ''future proof''. If you want the latest and greatest get an i7 4790k and there you'll be fine for quite some time.

It all boils down to what you plan to be doing.. Heavy gaming? Video Editing? 3D rendering?

Agree with the 2 two posts above: NOTHING IS FUTURE PROOF. With that being said. stating a budget and intentions will allow us to help you.

It was just a quick question about buying a new processor. Either splashing the cash on a £210 cpu or holding a little back and buying a great i5 4690.

It depends on what GPU you are using. You may not need an i5 4670K unless you are going for something like 280x or 770. For most cases, an i3 4150 will be sufficient.

you didn't anger me, but ''future proof'' is a subject term. You could have someone on a core 2 duo that's totally happy, content and has no desire to upgrade because they don't see the need. Future proof should essentially mean, can you be happy with your performance for 2-3+ years. This is all dependent upon what your goals and intentions for the build are.

I'll 4th that nothing is future proof.

You'll need to let us know how long you want it to last, budget, and what you want to do with it in order to have a hope for advising something.

That said, if you want something to browse the web, word processing, and watching netflix... any dual (or greater) core CPU made in the last couple years will do you for the next few years.

Well if you're just going to be gaming. Get an i5 4690 or i5 4690k (if you overclock). Since you're now talking about graphics..are you trying to upgrade your graphics too? The i5 4690/k should hold you over for quite some time... there are still plenty of people rocking sandy bridge i5 2500ks.

As mentioned nothing is futureproof but I'd say the closest thing you can get is buy the most expensive i7 you can afford.
Could probably upgrade a few builds without having to change CPU if you did this, if you insist on buying the best now to not have to upgrade so much later this is the way to go.

Four-year-old Core i5-750 here, still gaming at 60 FPS in pretty much everything, and that includes new stuff. I'll probably decide when to upgrade when Broadwell starts getting reviewed.

Any Intel CPU out of the i7 or i5 4000 series is going to last a long time. Just look at the i7 920 it's still a good CPU to this day. My thoughts on future proofing are this... If you buy a good quality case and PSU then you'll be set for easy upgrades in the future. That is the best you can do as far as future proofing goes.

:pt1cable:

Great CPU, but when i put my first build together i got a MOBO that doesn't support OC'ing, so i made a pretty big mistake there.
