I'm building a new PC for a local business and I'm running into a fairly major issue.
Intel i5-4460 (stock cooler, Arctic Silver)
400w Power supply
MSI h81m-p33 Motherboard
2 x 2GB DDR3 RAM (1333)
2 x Western Digital Blue Hard Drives
Generic DVD-Rom
I initially built the PC and it started up fine. First time I booted it, the BIOS hung but I rebooted and everything seemed fine. I stuck my Windows 7 install disk in the DVD drive and started the install process.
Trouble began when the computer went to reboot during the install process. The computer would not reboot. The system would power up for about 2 seconds with CPU fan spinning and then the system would power down. This cycle would repeat until I unplugged the PC.
I took everything out and started testing everything by putting each part in piece by piece. Still the same power cycle.
I initially thought that I was dealing with a bad motherboard so I sent it back to Newegg. Got the new motherboard today. I installed everything again and I'm still having the same problem.
I pulled the 24-pin power connector off of the new motherboard and jumpered it using a paper clip. When I do this I can hear all of my drives spinning up and the power supply seems to stay on.
So, am I dealing with a bad CPU or a bad PSU? Is it possible there's a short in the PSU someplace? If it's a bad CPU is there any way to test for this?
I'll take any help I can get.
