i have recently noticed a strange but intermittent noise coming from the power supply (Xilence 550w, just over 1 year old, regular use) in my PC, a high-pitched, warbling whistle/whine. i stopped the fan from turning, briefly, to check the bearings, but the noise continued, and pressing my ear to the back and side of the PSU makes me think it's the 'in' part making the noise as it's loudest near the power cord.
i checked all the other fans and possible causes, all good.
when it does happen, (like just now - maximised minecraft window showing the brown dirt background of the texture pack menu) hovering over a taskbar icon silences it when the pop-up appears... let it drop and the noise resumes.
re-maximised firefox (to continue writing this) and the noise continued at a higher pitch and different 'melody'.
minimised firefox, minecraft now displayed, sound changes to previous tone. exited the texture menu and the noise stopped. re-re-maximised firefox, and still silent.
i have also noticed a similar but different (and louder) noise when navigating the mostly red menus of simraceway last night, but hadn't pinpointed the source then, because the race had started.
so, is it on it's last legs? and what would be a suitable replacement, and not too expensive?
rest of my system looks like this: i5 2500K, Z68XP-UD3, 4GB 1600MHz, HD7850, 1 HDD and some fans.
