Usually getting the best graphics card is better than getting sli, as you will have a better option for upgrading in the future, and you won't be running into the issues that you can sometimes face with sli, like game compatibility and microstuttering.
But if you're getting that monitor, 2 GTX 770s would indeed be nice.

well you have a dilemma, get the 770 and sli, and overkill your 1080p monitor, or get another monitor, but with a single 770 you won;'t be able to run some games on ultra on both monitors

yeah but really the question is whether if i get the better card will i see the difference with 1080p....
as to the sli thing.... the game compatibility is a factor still not sure about microstuttering and ive seen some demos specs where the gtx770 in sli gives superior performance...

The gtx 770 in sli, gives much better performance, there's no doubt about that. I would personally just get the gtx 770 with the screen, and just lower the setting in games for now, and I would save up to put a second gtx 770 in there, down the line.

if you decide to sli you could see better performance in some games, it depends, can you run ultra atm? and at what fps normally on games?

would be a completely new rig i don't know....but basically what i am thinking if i go the 780 or sli 770 i will max out the 1080 p monitor. i am think the 770 will be able to do the job and i will be able to get high fps on a 1080p monitor and i ll have to think about upgrading both at some other point...

Well a 770 is like 10-20% lower performing tghan a 780, so if you sli it, the extra 770 bridges the 20% difference in performance and surpasses the 780

It is just more powerful. http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_770_sl... Have a look at the benchmarks in comparison to the 780

the article says
"
But obviously no challenge for GTX 770 SLI, even at 2560x1600 which quite honestly is over 4 Mpixels being rendered. Bear in mind that for mainstream cards we review at 1920x1200, and for high-end class cards 2560x1440 as shown above"

which leads me to why i asked I cant find benchmarks testing the cards at even 1920x1200 which leads me to thick that its over kill for those settings. So probably should just settle for gtx 770 with the 1080p monitor for price v notible performance value
