Im currently trying to install kali linux on a laptop of mine and i think the installer has frozen at 73%. It says its currently running post-installer trigger menu. Its been like this for an hour or so and don't want to forcefully turn it off due to fear of corruption. Any ideas on whats happening or do i need to wait longer?

More about : kali linux installer freeezes

I gotta ask... Why Kali? It's a very targeted release, not for general use.

I want to learn more about hacking in general and how some basics hacks are preformed.(ex wifi password hacks) I want to play the attacker for once because all we do in my high school is learn how to defend computers against attacks not attack them. My career that i am aiming also revolves around hacking and what not.

Be very, very careful when "playing" the hacker. Depending upon where you live, if you make a mistake it could land you in jail and/or blight any future employment prospects. And if you can't solve a simple installation problem then you are almost certainly going to make a mistake. Kali is intended, as they say on their website, only for professionals.

Anyway, that's your choice. But I'd hope that people here are more responsible than to assist someone who want to play the hacker.

Thus the advice to go to the Kali forums. Anything beyond installation help is verboten here as it runs into hacking/cracking. And agreed, if one knows one needs Kali then one already knows how to solve minor installation glitches.

Of course kali linux is for professionals but, i believe anyone can install/run kali linux or anything that anyone thinks only "professionals" should use armed with abit of technical know how and google. Currently i only plan on hacking my OWN wifi and computers, thus i am not dumb enough to go around and hack my neighbors wifi.

Edit: My future goal is to become a pen tester, not a black hat. Please do not assume everyone who downloads kali is using it for illegal purposes.

maybe you should try a distro that works for you and just install whatever tools Kali uses, being GNU\Linux I'm sure they're available in many repos or you could build a package if it isn't. It's been a long time now but I used Lubuntu with some penetration tools to play around with "hacking" my own network ... Stuff is available.

Unfortunately Kali uses patched drivers for many hardware to make pentesting tools work better. For example many wifi drivers require patching to be put into "monitor" mode. others require patching to enable "enjection"

So unless ready to compile your own kernel and apply patches, Kali is probably easier.

You're right about that, I wasn't to serious about "hacking" when I was trying stuff out. If I'm not mistaken I do believe there are a few other penetration testing distros out, the I can't remember the names at the moment.

Kali is actually a fork of the best-known one.

I think these specialized distributions are always going to be more difficult to install and configure than the popular ones like Ubuntu. The expectation is that people who are using them will be knowledgeable enough to solve trivial problems. It may even be that the distribution developers make it that little bit more difficult so as to discourage the script kiddies who fancy themselves as hackers.

Just my personal opinion, but I feel fairly strongly that we shouldn't offer any help with these sort of distros to those without the necessary knowledge to use them responsibly.

You are probably right about that ... When used just the tools with Lubuntu it didn't just plug in play work either, I actually had to make it work.

I agree with your opinion. If the OP can't figure out why the installer freezers then I doubt he could figure out the tools in the distro.
