I just recently found out why my virus scan seemed to freeze at about 7%. It wasn't freezing - it was processing just over 30 million little jpg's of shared network s**t.

The question is: how do I delete 30M files relatively quickly? I've been deleting for about 5 hours and (I did the math) at this rate it will take a week to delete all this garbage.

How do I just wipe this stuff off the drive without waiting for a week?

Solution

Ah, thats too bad the JPEGs are on the C drive. What I'd do now then use Shift + Delete button instead of normal Delete as it will bypass sending the files to Recycle Bin (which practically moving 3M JPEGs to another folder instead of deleting it off the drive) and hence reduce the time of deletion.

Else you could also try some Command Prompt command as well, but use with care and double check to make sure correct parameter and path used:

Windows deletion is very slow for large amount of files. I suggest copy other stuffs out of the drive to a backup drive, and then format that drive with 30M jpeg in it. Formatting the drive literally takes few seconds.

Oh. Duh. Sorry about that. In that case I would second Crushader's answer.
