I built a brand new gaming computer with a corsair cx500m power supply, and try to turn it on. When I do, the power supply boots for 1 second(makes a low humming noise and fan turns on) then stops, giving no power to anything. Is this a broken part or am I doing something wrong?

It might not be the power supply .
Its not a top end product but it is perfectly good for most builds

Try disconnecting the front panel power and reset buttons from the mb .
Will it start if you short the two power pins momentarily with the tip of a screw driver?

Also worth checking for shorts of any kind between the case , psu and motherboard

BTW what is the rest of the computer that you are trying to power with it?

it works when I short it, the fan atleast, but when i take the paperclip out and plug it back into the motherboard, it doesn't work. could this be a problem with the motherboard?

That checked whether the switches on the case were the problem

Now what hardware are you trying to run? A complete list please
