in my honest opinion, I think you should be changing your motherboard. If you go for the ASUS Z97, you will have to get an Intel 4th Gen Core. I am planning to get a ASUS Z97-A and an i7-4790K, or you could go with the i7-4770K. If you don't want to overclock, you could go with the i7-4770 or the i7-4790.

Yes, you could consider upgrading to a Z97 as you think.. But as far as considering CPU, if it is for gaming purpose, save money and go with i5.. Because as per Tom's hardware's CPU hierarchy chart, the processors listed in top tier will offer same performance in games (difference is very small in benchmarks).. If its for video rendering or heavy multi-tasking, get an i7..
