So I had a gtx 590 donated to me. It killed a low end 750 watt power supply I had so I ordered in a cheap novatech powerstation 850watt psu (Still in the post). My Question is, will this psu work with my system and not suddenly cut out and die on me like my low end 750 watt psu?. Buying an expensive psu is not really an option for me at the moment.

My system:
Asus p8z77 premium mobo
i7 3770k cpu
8gb corsair vengence ram
Point of view gtx 590
2x 2tb wd cavier blue hdds
4x 120 mm akasa venom fans

For a system using a single GeForce GTX 590 graphics card NVIDIA specifies a minimum of a 700 Watt or greater system power supply that has a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 50 Amps or greater and that has at least two 8-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

Total Power Supply Wattage is NOT the crucial factor in power supply selection!!! Sufficient Total Combined Continuous Power/Current Available on the +12V Rail(s) is the most critical factor.

Overclocking of the CPU and/or GPU(s) may require an additional increase to the maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current ratings, recommended above, to...

Technically it meets the specs listed on nVidia's website for the 590, and seems to have enough power. I can't promise that the components inside the Novatech are quality though. They can fail just as easily on the 590 as they could a 560, with the same result.

I don't really understand you. If you saw it killed that low end 750W, why did you bought another low end one? For your setup, you better have bought a quality 500-550W PSU instead of that cheapo 850. And, come on, PSUs are not that expensive. You can find many good PSUs with under 100$.

I actually had one of those supplies in my first ever build.

Unless they've changed since then, I seem to remember that they were just re-badges of the OCZ ModXStream Pro series. Not a massively bad PSU, but not good either.

The issue that I had, was that it's a multi-rail supply. Meaning it splits the 12v rail into two. As far as I can recall it does come near enough to its labelled wattage when you add them both up, the problem is, by the very nature of multi-rail and semi-modular, you won't be able to get that full 850w through, say for example, a PCIe cable.

I had the 600w version and found that it was underpowering an ATI 6950, a 250w card I believe. This caused shut downs and many, many blue screens. Fortunately, it was decent enough to use the safety features most decent power supplies have in order to cut itself off before any damage occurred. Which is more than I can say for those dirt-cheap supplies.

In short, I wouldn't recommend it. But, the 850w variant should be able to power that system.

The additional amount required will depend on the magnitude of the overclock being attempted.

Novatech 850Watt Power Station V2 Black Edition
• OEM: ???
• maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 70.8 Amps
four (6+2)-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors
• Semi-Modular Output Cables: Yes
• Official Intel Haswell Compliance: ???
• 80 PLUS BRONZE Efficiency Certification
• 2 Year Limited Warranty

When it received its 80 PLUS BRONZE Certification it was tested at a +12V current draw of 59.1 Amps so it should be able to power your system with that graphics card.
