'high end games' - on a pentium dual core.

Just curious what socket/generation of intel is this? Sandy Bridge? Nehalem (not sure if that had pentium)? IvyB? Or was it the Core2 era?

The newer pentium's are decent enough for gaming, but you're not going above medium settings with that. I would probably suggest the R9 270 or a GTX 760 but without knowing exactly what kind of CPU that is, it's hard to tell if it would bottleneck.

Ohhhh I used to have one.

Perhaps you can upgrade to a used Core2Quad? I would suggest a Pentium G3258 with an MSI B41 LGA 1150 motherboard. Once you upgrade the BIOS, you can overclock that thing up to like 4.5 GHz on the stock heatsink.

Well, it is a really old CPU, but if you must game on it I hope you only plan on playing old games from 2010 or earlier. As for the graphics card, this R7 250X would be the maximum I would recommend assuming the motherboard has the required PCI express slot: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-r7250x1gd5

@ OP - Please buy a 3rd generation i3 that has hyper threading. You'll be left in the dust without it. And make sure that the motherboard you're going to get supports Ivy Bridge out of the box if you do decide to go with the 3rd gen, as older chipsets require a BIOS update to work with Ivy Bridge, which then requires you to buy a sandy bridge processor to upgrade

@ PersonIQuoted - Those are underpowered and aren't the best he can get. A 760 will be the best option along with the R9 270 just because the i3 with hyperthreading is plenty good enough for most games, assuming you're not going to attempt to max out Battlefield 4, since BF4 is a very CPU demanding game.

well I don't demand it ;)
It's still up to you, but 3rd generation is the smartest move with your current budget. I would also suggest, if you can afford, to get an i3 that is Haswell (LGA 1150, 4th Gen), because you will have headroom to upgrade to an i5 or any broadwell chip down the road.

I'm not sure about maxing out Watch_Dogs, since the game is optimized so god awfully, but most of the other games you should be able to play at medium - high settings at 60FPS without problems. BF4 might be a little more demanding on the CPU though, so you may have to turn down some settings in that. Watch_Dogs should be able to run 60FPS medium without any problems.

Well
The i3 4th gen is about the same price and has significantly less power usage (lower). I would suggest going with the newer 4th gen haswell cpus.
