Hi hardware guys,

My problem is that sometimes, not that often though, my computer freezes up and the screen is completely covered with pixelated graphics of small blocks. Almost like this guy's pic:

I have tried some different drivers, but I refuse to believe that is the problem, since it both happens with 13.12 and 14.4 (and even the newer beta versions 14.7).

When:
It all started after I upgraded my graphics card. Before that I have never seen this happen. In between the upgrade I have re-installed Windows to ensure there were no old driver leftovers.

My system:

  • OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit, with update 1
    CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K, 3.4GHz
CPU cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H80i Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler
    PSU: Corsair AX860 (860W)
RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum, 8GB (2x 4GB, dual channel)
    Motherboard: ASUS Maximus V Formula
Graphics card: ASUS AMD R9 290 DirectCUII OC, 4GB GDDR5
    Previous card: Sapphire Radeon 5850HD, 1GB GDDR5
I have taken a screenshot of SpeedFan displaying the temperatures when a game like WoW is running: http://i.imgur.com/Ny0tfbc.png

Feel free to ask me, if I need to supply you with some additional information.

I'd be very happy if you could give me a bit of help.

Speed fan shows that your GPU fan isn't running. Check to see if the fan on your GPU is actually not running or if it's just a SpeedFan error. If your fan actually is running, you may have a faulty graphics card, in which case contact the graphics card manufacturer.

The fan is definitely running, because I just opened the case to see.

SpeedFan might not show that, but it seems GPU-Z does:

Hmm, I might need to contact ASUS support then....

Thanks for your answer, though
