Im building my first pc and ive gotten to placing the mobo in the case. the hardware that came with the case only includes 2 motherboard standoffs (none missing cause it says x2 in the manual). Am I supposed to have more standoffs in the mobo box or something? There is also something that looks kinda like a standoff preinstalled in the case. The case is a Cougar Solution and the mobo is a Gigabyte 78LMT-S2P. Thanks!

You should have a standoff for every single motherboard mounting hole. If you only used the two you would snap the board trying to install anything into a memory or pci slot.

The case may have pre built in stand offs if there is screw holes in it.

You need all motherboard holes screwed down properly. The oem did not put them there because they wanted to spend extra money. They keep the board from breaking and also from being able to ground out at the case.

Most all micro-atx boards have at least 6 mounting holes.

i see now that my case has raised tabs where the standoffs should go. when i place the board in without standoffs it lines up perfectly with the i/o shield. is it possible that these metal tabs function as standoffs?

Yes, I was just looking up that case. The tabs are your standoffs, if there is a mounting hole in the baord where those tabs are not at, use a standoff.
