I have a router (w/ built in wireless) and two 3Com unmanaged switches. I'm trying to setup a network so me and 4 other friends. How would I go about setting that up (as in: where would I hook wires up and what settings would I have to change)? Would I need static IPs or would the router do that?
Ex. of what I was thinking:
Modem<--->(Router)<-----cable------>(Switch)<-------PC Game Server
\-----PC01
\----PC02 etc.

Router (I think this is the model I have): http://www.zyxel.com/us/en/products_services/nbg_418n.shtml?t=p
Switch (selling one of the two): http://lansing.craigslist.org/sys/4543245562.html

Thanks!

It depends upon the games you would be playing - I would assume that if you setup DHCP/DNS on your router, that all PC's/Servers attached to the network would be able to connect. I do know some programs (i.e. I use Synergy for a virtual KVM - and it requires IP addresses - not computer names) require an IP address to connect. If you are required to setup static IP addresses, this can be done on the router using the MAC addresses of the PC's/Devices/Servers that would be connecting to each other.

Also, since all computers will be hardwired on the network, is port-forwarding necessary because I'll simply be running a server on the local network so I wouldn't think so. (We'll be playing Hidden: Source, Unturned, Minecraft, other fun multiplayer games).
