I'm just trying to confirm here that I'll be able to do an SLI set-up with two EVGA GTX 580's. I'm working on my first build, and a guy at my local computer store claimed that GTX cards couldn't be set-up for SLI until the 600 series.

Yes you can SLI 580's... As long as your motherboard supports SLI and your PSU can handle them. Sounds like the guy at your local shop has no idea what he is talking about and probably should not be in this area of sales...
on a side note... Why are you getting GTX 580's?

You should not go back to that store. The guy is a fool. What does he think the SLI connectors are for on the card then? It may depend on the card itself but most 580s, most likely all, can be SLI'd.

He probably wanted you to purchase a higher end card :p .

I'm getting 580's because I'm a student on a tight budget, and I had two friends each selling them secondhand. Thanks for the responses! I figured the salesperson was trying to push the 600s at the store. The confirmation is re-assuring.

On the subject...I notice each of you have Motherboard badges. Can either of you speak to the quality of this motherboard for an SLI set-up with 580's?

Gigabyte makes decent motherboards... From what I can tell that seems like a pretty good one - you should have no issues SLIing with it.

here is a review comparing it to a few other boards, seems for the price its a good pick.

I have seen decent reviews of the board; however, I normally try to push one of the gaming boards from MSI such as the Gaming 5 or the GD65. I have had personal experience with these and have had pretty good luck. They really did not have many hiccups and ran everything great. I have had too many little bugs with Asus and Gigabyte that I tend to be on the more cautious side and do a ton of research when purchasing a board from them.

The MSI Gaming 5 looks like it's right up my alley. Thanks very much.
