i literally have a Dell Studio 540 i have been upgrading to a studio and gaming PC
Q8200 core 2 Quad
4 gb ram

i have an Samsung 840 pro for my OS disk from which i run normal software (office, auto cad, Photoshop) but to increase speed i want to run my games and Studio software (fruity, pro tools, reasons ect..) from a second disk. i got this idea from my setup with my old HHDs.

first, is this necessary? Should i run the "important" software from a second disk like an SSD or fast HDD to increase speed, or is the 840 enough to run all software

if you think it will increase performance should i go with another 250 gb 840 pro or 500 gb evo. i heard the evo was faster but has less reliability and longevity.

The difference in longevity between the EVO and PRO is 9.5 years vs 10 years.
(Not actual numbers, but that's the general concept)

What size is your primary SSD? How much used space currently?
If you're going to get another, get the 500GB EVO.

I read something like 19 vs 80 years for evo vs pro: does seem a bit far fetched for new tech thought. I have the 256 gb pro. It will have virtual version of about 4 other OSs and the rest of my software. I want to put all my studio software, plugins, and games on secondary dive to operate in tandem with os disk but want to avoid filling disk to 75% because I heard that will shorten ssd lifespan

Yes, it very much depends on how you use it. About 85% full is the cutoff line.

But 19yrs vs 80yrs? How many HDD's are you using that are 19 years old? How large are they?
I have a Dell laptop almost that old, and using the 2GB drive in it would be simply silly today. Same with the 10GB drive in the 14 year old Sony. Same with a 256GB drive in 20 years.

As long as I can get atleast 5-10 years out of the drive I'm not to worried. The most important thing is that I will be placing very larg applications that read and write often and an entired vst plugin and sound sample library on the secondary drive. Id like yo know if doings this will give me a speed increase at all and if so would the evo hold up or should I go with the pro
