I looked at tom's Hardware's picks for graphics cards within this 200-300 dollar price range and noticed their was a lower end tie between the R9 280 and the EVGA GTX 760. Using PCPartPicker I looked at all the available GPUs for the three types that tom said were the best and there was a large list, for many different reasons. As usual, different manufactures, different variations, different specs, different prices. And I just wasn't sure which of the bunch was the best!? I currently am running an Intel build with an EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 GPU which I would like to upgrade.

Should I switch to AMD?
Which one is the best for the price?
Which one is best for around $250?

My Build

Thanks!

P.S. The three GPUs tom's hardware picked were: Radeon R9 280, GeForce GTX 760, and Radeon R9 280X.

In my opinion, the performance increase from a GTX 660 to a GTX 760 is not worth $250.

Well I was wondering about that too. I'm going to sell my 660 to help me pay for the upgrade. I'm trying to upgrade some components of my PC. Namely, I'm going to get a Samsung SSD and an Intel i7 4770k, I'm just not sure what to get for a GPU.

r9 280 or the GTX 770. But seriously, you can find an r9 290 $350 on some days (prices are sporadic atm) which will blow both of these out of the water.

But wont the new 800 series be way more expensive? If they dont have something like and 860 in the 200-300 dollar price range, I dont want to wait.

This - though I can't imagine going back to AMD... I still can't believe it's been a full year and not a single price drop on the GTX 760 from Nvidia.

I'm in the same spot - need an upgrade to my GTX 660. Nvidia had better release the GTX 860 before the end of the year...

So does anyone believe the 800 series will come soon and be affordable enough or not? Because I would like to stick with Nvidia and EVGA and im hesitant to switch to AMD.

The 800 series will probably be here in a few months, but I think they're planning to release the high end GPUs first.

They may hit q4 this year or be pushed to q1 next year. Either way, they are going to cost ~same as the 700 series. AMD current builds are great, and the flak against them is mostly misinformation/brand loyality. ATM it is hard to justify Nvidia pricings. but I would say it is personal preference. I don't think it is worth it to wait if you're impatient, just because the 800 series release information is still speculation. The 700 series prices arent going anywhere and will last you a long long time.
