I have a Dell Optiplex 780 Mini tower that is a good computer with lots of space and good amount of RAM but I need a good graphics card as mine is getting out of date. From what I have researched I come to the understanding that I need to get a "skinny single slot card". I have the physical stats for the box:
Height: 40.80 cm
Width: 18.70 cm
Depth: 43.30 cm

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions. If you need anymore stats just ask thx.

heres mine ... but in the end all you can do is buy one and try it and if it don't work then you know kinda what the deal was

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers

looking at that vid-card they used in that manual that mayby the highest card the board can handle .. and the pci-e slot may not be the full 75w and just cut back to 25 or 30w and only meant to support low end cards.. but the only way to know for sure is buy a card and stick it in and hope for the best

P.S just wanted to let the guy see what can happen as most find out putting a too powerful card on these oem boards.. I never said it will not work but he needs to find solid proof the one he wants will

they don't come with the nice spec, vrm's as our custom builds do and they will cut the power back on the pci-e slot to prevent it from burning up something on the board and then you come back on them to fix it ..
there cheap low end boards built to only be guaranteed to work with what it came with out of the box that's it the rest is all on you

I bet that board did not come with a 8+2 or 12 phase vrm on it now did it? maybe a 4 phase with out a sink on it cause its not meant to power too much over what it shipped with

Vrm is irrelevant and in this case, extra phases is useless. Unless stated otherwise the mobo conforms to pcie standards. There are reasons why standards exist.

In any case, never generalize. It's very rare to be locked from upgrading a gpu and it's rare to have a low power pcie slot. You shouldn't blanket such rare issues on all oem pcs. He stated a specific model so you look it up. It took me less than a minute to see, it can be upgraded, it's the same layout as all dell btx, pcie 2.0, and it has a 305w psu. This knocks out all your possible issues in less than 60 seconds. Train your google-fu and give answers. Don't waste time typing up possible issues and then find out it's all in vain.

ok then go back and find all the prebuilts and talk to them that cant get there cards to work .. I had guys take them to pc shops and they cant get the cards to work[some say they tried 3 to 5 different cards] , but funny is that they put the oem back in and all works fine so lets here some more on this .. all the oem works but the aftermarkets don't ?? hmmmm

''the mobo conforms to pcie standards'' no sir

one more point to ponder, why don't you go to the boards manufacture on these prebuilts and get there bios updates???
because there dell spec. boards made for dell specs for the application and its a dell bios wrote for that model to work with in the dell limits as they see fit .. not a open full atx spec, as we get

did you prvt. message that guy that said the card he used worked and got a update from him on that??

have you looked over the dell forums to see if someone wrote in on this ??

I'm not telling you don't do it but you need to know there maybe some risk involved in the end you have to decide on what you think is best and go with it
just like everything else 2 things will happen -1- it will work fine -2- it don't

good luck
