HP System Recovery Discs - New Motherboard

I recently had a horrible system crash after updating to Windows 8.1 (from 8).

Now after doing a system refresh, my Windows software will not activate, and neither Microsoft or HP seem to want to help me much, but HP did finally send me out a set of System Recovery disks a few days ago. Long before all this happened I had to change my motherboard and Microsoft were then quite happy to reactivate my OEM software over the phone due to the original motherboard being faulty. I am now concerned that if I use the System Recovery disks (which obviously results in my entire system being formatted) I will end up with the same activation problem due to the fact that I have a different motherboard in the PC, and Microsoft seem much less inclined to help me with the issue than they did originally.

I understand that because this is OEM software, I am pushing my luck having changed a major system component, but guess I would really rather not go out and purchase a brand new Windows licence if I don't have to - especially since nothing that occurred in this series of events was my fault - I just wish I never installed the damn 8.1 update! But if it comes down to having to purchase new software, I guess that's what I'll have to do.

The key should now work with your new motherboard. It should be fine for reinstalling windows next time unless you change the motherboard again.
You could go buy a Window 8.1 license from Amazon or Microsoft directly and this will allow you to have one PC with Windows. You can move that license as long it is installed onto one PC.
