About the system image and backups

I have a system image and backup on an external drive. I am replacing my mobo and CPU with new ones( not the same as old ones). The system image and backup files are just numbered. How do I reinstalled all those files onto the hard drive? Do a clean install of the OS and then just restore the programs and files. Or use the backup and restore feature in Windows. My OS is windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. It is an upgrade version from my full version of Windows Vista ultimate 64 bit.

If you are changing the motherboard and the cpu, i wouldn't recommend you to reuse your system image. You should reinstall Windows since it will most likely have different drivers for the motherboard.
If you do not have the retail version of Vista ultimate then you will need an OS. You can reuse the upgrade version of Window 7, you may need to use the automated phone service for activation.
The backup files containing documents, picture and videos are fine to move around.

Thanks, I thought as much about the clean install. I do have the full retail version of windows vista ultimate. I will install that first then the upgrade of windows 7 ultimate. Hopefully I will be able to locate all the files and programs and reinstall them.
