This is a Toshiba 1TB external USB drive which I have for only my photos. SInce I have outgrown it as it is completely filled I wanted to transfer some of these not so often folders to another hard drive. It shows up under computer but there is no plus box to open all the folders that are in there. When I click the drive it says it is not accessible I have tried it on 2 computers without avail. Toshibas answer was to give me a phone number to a company to recover it and/or return it for a new drive. The recovery I am told could be $500 which there is no way I can afford this. If I return it then all my work is lost.
Any suggestions on what I can do?

Is it a 2.5 inch drive or a 3.5 inch drive? You could always try to remove the drive from it's enclosure and putting it into another one or plug it directly to a sata port on the motherboard to see if it works. Sorry to hear that though :(
