Should I use two video cards?

So I am currently at an art college and doing a lot of work with Autodesk Maya, Mudbox, and 3ds Max and am looking to improve my computer speed and workflow. At the same time, I use my computer to game on. I am looking to get a second, or upgraded graphics card. Currently I am selecting the GTX 780 Ti; I already own and use a GTX 650. What I want to do is to have 2 monitors and allow one to have the 750 Ti and do all of my rendering on that card along with specified Ram for it. My main question is can I use the two graphics cards separately, effectively speeding up my rendering while allowing myself to web surf and other easy tasks on my second monitor? And will this work out well? Or would i be better of with just one graphics card and partition some of my Ram to allow rendering in the background? Otherwise let me know of what would work better. Thanks.

Best to get the biggest single GPU you can. Managing a second monitor doesn't really affect the load too much. If you want a lot of compute power, a workstation card might be for you. Also, AMD has some pretty good cards as well. A 780ti would be really nice if you have the $$$ though.
