Hi,

I have a DELL Optiplex 380. It's kinda of dated. Can I swap the whole motherboard and replace with a new gigabyte B85M-D3V motherboard? Will the PSU able to support? What will happen if it is underload?

Thanks.

If I'm following the specs correctly, your computer has an LGA775 motherboard and an Intel Core 2 Quad processor. If you're going to switch motherboards, you're probably going to have to get a new CPU (and probably PSU) also. Just taking those three components, you're already looking at 50% +/- of the cost of a complete new build. A new build would actually be easier to put together than going through the ass-pain of trying to find compatible upgrades for an...ummm...older OEM system that was originally designed to be an office PC.

We'll help you with appropriate upgrades, but you should seriously think about just replacing the whole thing. It will probably be cheaper and easier in the long run. And the short run, for that...

The Dell Optiplex 380 is a great system to upgrade to a Xeon 5xxx processor. You can get a modified bios at bios-mods forums. I bought an old Dell Optiplex 380 system refurbished from Dell for about $80 with an E7500 Intel core 2 duo processor and upgraded it to a Xeon E5430 for about $20. The cpu benchmark went from about 1800 to 4000. Great little computer to play older games in Windows 7.
