What do the 8gb ssds attached onto the 1tb normal hdds do? Does it make the hdd perform as fast or close to an ssd? I'm about to buy a y50, and am not sure if I should just buy one with a straight up 120 ssd or one of these...

Solution
those are called hybrid drives.....

Hybrid storage products monitor the data being read from the hard drive, and cache the most frequently accessed bits to the high-speed NAND flash memory. The data stored on the NAND will change over time, but once the most frequently accessed bits of data are stored on the flash memory, they will be served from the flash, resulting in SSD-like performance for your most-used files

Hybrid drives are faster then normal HDD but are slower then SSD.

Thanks for super quick reply!!! Will it also speed up the laptops boot up speed?

I know the SSD will speed up the boot time of the OS and load times for any program installed on it, im not sure if the hybrid drive will do that for the OS or not it should help with load times on most frequently accessed bits of data. Ive never owned a hybrid drive so I just don't know of hand.
