CPU usage and transcoding

Hey guys! I figured this was related to my CPU so I'd ask it in this part of the forum.

I have a A10-7850k for my HTPC. I do not have an aftermarket cooler YET.

Basically what I'm doing is getting movies into MKV files and transcoding them to MP4 so that I can use them with Plex Media Server and so that my system does not need to transcode on the fly.

My question is as follows: Is there a such thing as too much transcoding?

I know that transcoding uses as much of the CPU as possible, but since I'm new at this I want to make sure I don't over do it and overuse my CPU.

Thank you for your responses.

Best Regards!

Solution

Over transcoding? No. If your cpu is running at 100% that is fine. I do it all the time in video rendering :).

@ak47jar3d

Thanks so much! According to AMD Overdrive it's getting to like 13-15 degrees Celsius thermal margin. And from what I've read that's the distance from when the CPU will automatically shut down. Is that distance considered safe? I know Core Temp puts that at like 55-57 degrees Celsius.

Thank you and best regards!

57 degrees is more than fine. Some cpu can work at 95C (kind of dangerous though) so you are more than ok.
