Which one should I choose? I have seen both in action and it seems the only place 290 loses is in Tessmark but I'm an nvidia fanboy. I found a 290 for same price as a 770 and I need help on which one to choose. Real answers please, not some "both are great just pick one up". I'm pretty sure AMD cards can't use some nvidia features such as Gsync and the 3D vision for monitors and such, but I don't play games that require a butt ton of power. I will definitely not spend that much money on a monitor either unless it's worth my money.

The R9 290 is superior in performance terms. Ideally suited to 1440p gaming. The GTX 770 is a very good solution for 1080p gaming. But if they are the same price & your PSU/case can support them, it makes sense to go with the R9 290.

GTX 770 requires 30 Amps on the 12v rail & a 550W PSU minimum

R9 290 requires 31 Amps on the 12v rail & a 550W PSU minimum

Both require 1x 6-pin & 1x 8-pin PCI-E depending on the specific model of card,

290 will run circles around 770, however I suggest a decent custom 290, stock ones have shit cooling. 290 Tri-X is a good choice, for example, I have it's it's X version which I enjoy very much.

Besides with custom you will get free factory overclocking covered by warranty too.

The R9 290 is a solid step up over the GTX 770. I really wouldn't worry about either Nvidia or AMD's proprietary features. The only one that might actually be consequential is Gsync, and AMD has their own answer to that on the table: http://community.amd.com/community/amd-blogs/amd-gaming/blog/2014/05/29/what-is-project-freesync

What's your monitor resolution? If you're gaming on a mainstream 1080p/60 Hz monitor, the R9 290 is overkill. You could just stick with the 770 (or better-priced R9 280X) and be more than fine.

770gtx = 280x decent at 1080P 120hz / see some reviews doing good at 1440P

780gtx = 290 non x decent at 1440P 60hz may need 2 cards to do the 144hz

780ti = 290x very good at 1440P may need another for 144 or 4kat60

depends on resolutions your playing at and budget. I went with the 780gtx i play at 5760x1080 i should've went with a 290 or X. I paid a premium price tag :( but my system is old still..hehe..good ole x58 :p....why fix something that isnt broke. My wallet is broke i cant fix that.

Is the 290 unreliable? I want it because it's pretty good but friend says it's unreliable and 770 is better because it's more reliable and I am an nvidia fanboy like I said earlier.

Reliability? I find both cards to be equal as long as you stay way from reference 290 (which runs really hot and could kill itself early).

The hardware might be reliabe but their drivers are pants, I had to wait ten months for a stable driver the 7790.

Drivers give your operating system (Windows) an interface through which to talk to a piece of hardware, such as a video card or whatever else.

I subjectively see more people complain about AMD drivers, but I question how much of it is honestly accurate. I've never had a problem, and I suspect there's a lot of fanboy-ism/confirmation bias/forum echo-chamber things going on. The few people who have problems are more likely to be vocal about it, etc.

I went from an HD 5850, which i had no problems with & really loved the card. To a GTX 670, which i now really love likewise. Of the two, the 670 is the one that gave me problems, as the the 600 series had a red screen of death problem early on in it's life.

As oxiide says, i'm not sure how much of the complaints are personal experience & a small majority, to people chiming on what they heard from a friend of a friend along a chain of miss-information of word of mouth.
