Upgrading PC soon and was wondering if I should go with an i5-4570/4690/4670/4670K on a MSI Z87-G43 OR go with overclocking my FX-6300 with a 212 cooler and crossfiring my MSI R9 270x. How big would the performance difference be?

I want to keep my upgrading budget below/around $500.

Just make sure your motherboard and PSU can support the second card.

Yes, in most cases you will beat any single gpu card. The scaling is great when a game is properly supported ;)  which most are these days. http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/5984/sapphire-radeon-...

So I should go with the crossfire 270x's over the i5 upgrade?

Yes I do suggest adding the second GPU in this case. The performance gain will be much more than just switching to Intel with a single GPU.

I would look into a good cooler like the evo 212 to overclock your CPU first, and also make sure your power supply is good enough for crossfire 270x and your overclocked CPU. I would suggest at least a high quality 850w PSU like this one: http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=63239 this xfx is manufactured by Seasonic, so it's of great quality. :)

I currently have a CM i600-series 600w, 80plus Bronze certified, would that be good enough?

Which motherboard do you have?

I'd advise selling your 270x and getting a stronger single GPU than having dual GPU's. They are often not fully utilised and you may get better performance from a single card.

No it won't be enough for two cards and CPU overclocking. That is why I recommended an 850w power supply. :)  You could probably get away with a high rated 750w unit though.
