I have a Toshiba 1TB Store E Partner external HDD and it was working perfectly up until I was watching a film from the HDD plugged into the USB port on my TV which i do on a regular basis. For some reason the device disconnected itself from the TV.

This prompted me to plug it back into the laptop and now it isn't recognized and by this I mean barely anywhere.

It does not show up in windows explorer or disk management (the only things in there are my internal laptop HDD and the CD Rom drive). It sort of shows up in device manager but not under 'disk drives' only under the USB drives and is listed as 'USB Mass Storgae Device'.

Strange thing is sometimes when i plug in the HDD and look in device manager the 'USB mass storage device' shows as working properly, but other times it displays a yellow exclamation mark next to it and says 'the device cannot start code 10'.

Things I have tried:

- Uninstalling the driver associated with the mass storage device and letting windows re install it.
- Updating the driver (says its already the most up to date)
- Checked device manager thoroughly for the HDD to show up... it is not there.
- Tried the HDD in a friends PC does not show there either.
- Bought a new cable to see if it was that... it wasnt.

Strange thing is when it is not displaying a exclamation mark next to it in device manager.. i can click in the bottom right hand side of the desktop to safely remove the device and it does recognise the name of the device there. If it has got an exclamation mark next to it then trying to safely remove only shows 3 dots (...) where the name of the HDD should be.

If it was dead then surely it wouldnt boot or show up here from time to time? It has a load of films on it so i would rather not have to format it, but as this point Im not even sure how to format it as i cant access it anywhere.

Sorry for the life story here just wanted to put as much detail as possible.

Btw im running windows 8.1 if that of any use to anyone.

Thanks in advance

Hi

Unfortunately this looks like a hardware fault so formatting will not help

If under guarantee go back to the vendor
But if data recovery important go to a recovery expert
This gets expensive

If the USB tray is openable look inside
Unfortunately some hard disks integrate the USB to sata interface onto the hard disk circuit board

This makes things very difficult to bypass and get to the sata interface

If there is a seperate USB to sata interface board you can buy replacement devices
Ranging from docking stations , USB trays or a cable with interface on the end

Or put inside a desktop and connect to sata power & data cables

Having done all this you can find out if the fault was the hard disk or USB to sata bridge circuit or...

Thanks for the reply. I thought something along these lines might have been the case. I find it strange that it just stopped working half way through watching a film due to a hardware problem. I usually associate those types of problems if the device has been dropped, damaged or tinkered with but there we go!

Its hardly worth even trying to get it fixed as its not that expensive to replace anyway.. just a pain in the ass that it would happen now.

I would try and take the casing off however it seems to be one unit with no easy way atleast to get inside.

Thanks again

Try CrystalDiskInfo or HD Sentinel. The latter will attempt to retrieve SMART information from the HDD behind the USB-SATA bridge. If it is unable to do so, it will then display whatever is reported by the bridge firmware (aka "USB mass storage device").
