Here is what I'm currently thinking of putting together for my first build. Looking for opinions and possible upgrades/downgrades that I may have missed.

AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor
Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Asus Radeon R9 270 2GB DirectCU II Video Card
Corsair CX 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

Id recommend a better power supply if you can afford it, you wont need more than 650W from a quality brand like Antec, XFX, or Seasonic.

Good build. I would try to invent in an i5 build if possible (Am3 is a dead platform with no chance of upgrade beyound fx 8350), I would go for different power supply (EVGA,XFX, or Seasonic).

Your build is fine. I would not change your PSU, Corsair PSUs are as good as any other. I have built 10 PCs with them and havent had a problem yet. They have good warranties and good support. Make sure to buy a 3rd party cooler if you plan to overclock that CPU.

The problem isn't with corsair PSUs, it's with the CX series. Have a look at this list for what PSUs to buy: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1804779/power-su...

Have a look at this build:

It has a better CPU, better graphics card, better RAM, a cpu cooler, a better power supply and windows 8.1 (as windows 7 is losing support in january, it would be pointless to buy it now.)

Edit: Thanks to Garl6, I realized OP didn't want to go with a blu-ray writer, only a reader, so this doesn't go too high above the budget.

This was another build i was looking at. Its right at the $1000 mark without psu and xtra cooling. I have case and a temp psu i can use for now to stay at 1k.

Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Asus Maximus VI Formula ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
EVGA GeForce GTX 760 2GB Video Card
Asus BW-12B1ST/BLK/G/AS Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)
Was also looking at the extreme 4, read good reviews on it. As for 8.1. I just heard terrible things so I could go either way as I have yet to use it myself.

Have a look at my build, it's better all-around if you can sacrifice the blu-ray drive, it has a much better graphics card and there's a PSU, a case and a CPU cooler included in the price.

This is how I would spend $1000 with an OS and a Blu Ray Drive like you had originally. You could buy the CPU cooler later and get a cheaper case to bring it closer to $1000. Personally I wouldn't even get a Blu Ray Drive, but that's up to you.
