Need a New Power Bar

Hi,
I just recently noticed that my power bar with built-in surge protection is getting kind of old. It's about four years old and in terms of electronics that's pretty ancient. The surge protection still works but when I started using it a few years ago I didn't consider that i would have a computer, an xbox one, a lamp and all your typical computer peripherals connected as well. These are all valuable and managed to get off without a scratch in the nearest blackout mostly to what appears to be sheer luck. Would buying a UPS/upgrading to a newer surge suppressor be a good idea?

Solution

Wrong price range. Good UPS start around $150 if you want something that can handle a PC, Xbox and a bunch of other things.

$60 barely covers the cost of a replacement battery pack for my APC XS1000.

Surge protectors do not do much about blackouts and brownouts (under-volrage)and MOVs do not wear out much unless they sink actual surges. Unless your line voltage regularly spikes at 200-330V (the typical MOV voltages found in 120V surge suppressors) then your bar's surge suppression is likely still fine.

If you want to protect equipment against brownouts and blackouts, you need an UPS.

Would you be able to recommend a good quality UPS in the 20-60 dollar range?

For all of those things? You'll spend a whole lot more than $60. They're really nice to have, but not entirely necessary. Most modern electronics can handle blackouts and brownouts fairly well, but if you want to guarantee that they'll be safe, get a good UPS, don't skimp on one. With all you want to put on it, you probably need a 1000w UPS at least.
