hi basically i have a meaty 7870xt ghz ed and as it has tahiti onboard i was thinking about whacking in a r9 280x at Christmas seeing as its the new 7970 and doing a crossfire with my 7870xt i know everyone always says oh but it will just downclock the 280x but i know for a fact that that does not happen anymore and has since like the 5000 series cards so dont give me that but i was just wondering if anybody has actually crossfired the 7870xt with either the r9 280x, r9 280 or even the old 7970 and if so i would like to know what sort of gains you got from pairing the cards and any problems you encountered during the process

also would a 750w corsair 80+GOLD modular psu be enough to power my rig when i stick in the 280x
right now i have the 7870 xt alongside
amd fx 6300
1x1tb seagate barricuda hdd
8gb ddr3 ram (1x8gb stick)
1xpci card
4x case fans
5x usbs
so i am wondering if it will be ok to put in another hdd, powerful cpu cooler an ssd and an r9 280x on a 750w, my rig is currently on a 500w ocz corestream and runs just great
as mentioned above i also wanted to know if anybody has actually crossfired the 7870xt with either the r9 280x, r9 280 or even the old 7970 and if so i would like to know what sort of gains you got from pairing the cards

thanks
Sammy

If you want to crossfire the 7870 with the 280x, you can't do that. You can only crossfire the same cards or chip in this occasion. For example, crossfiring a r9 280x with itself or a 280x and a 7970 is perfectly possible. I'm pretty sure you can't do a 7870 and a 280x. If you want to crossfire, buy two 280x cards.

u see u dont understand what card i am talking about i am not talking about the 7870 pitcairn i am talking about the 7870 xt (7870 tahiti le) a completely different animal it uses the same architecture as the 7950,7970,r9 280,r9 280x and is completely compatible with them via crossfire people just dont seem to do it that much for some reason

So then look around the internet to see if they are then. I don't have much I can tell you then because I have no experience with these two cards. Good luck in finding someone who has your answer.
