LG IPS224V Monitor - high pitch noise in standby

Hey all!

So I just bought an LG monitor - the IPS224V - one of the cheapest IPS screens you can buy. I am really happy with the picture quality, but there's one huge problem that's making me consider returning it:

It's making a high pitched whirring noise every time it's in standby, or when it's turned off but plugged in. The noise is at the upper limit of my hearing, and at first it seems faint, but it's in my bedroom and I can hear the noise while I sleep - super irritating.

I'm wondering:

  • ■ If there's anything I can do to fix the problem. Firmware, power/outlet related fixes, etc.
    ■ If this is just my specific monitor or if every one of this model makes the sound.
    ■ If this is common for monitors in general, and if there's a way to avoid ones that make high pitched noises.
    ■ Finally, if you all think I should return it. I know it's another question altogether, but would I notice the difference if I exchanged for a TN monitor of the same price? (I paid $115)

Thanks for the help, any input is appreciated!

EDIT: Here's the link to the monitor on Newegg. I bought it last week on sale for $115. Now they're sold out so the price looks higher.

Thanks for the suggestions. The monitor doesn't give any option to change the refresh rate it seems, even looked through the manual. I adjusted the brightness and the noise was still there, no matter the brightness level.

you change the refresh rate under windows/control panel/display/screen resolution/advanced setting. select monitor tab. try changing down one or up one to start with should find one that stops the noise.

Thanks, I tried, but it didn't make a difference -- the noise is still there. Good to know about refresh rate for the future though!

I really think it's a defect now. I contacted LG and they didn't have any answers, said I would need to send it in for repair. Instead I'm returning it to newegg and buying a different monitor. Sucks because I really like the picture quality on this LG one -- good for the really low price. Thanks again for the help.
