I recently bought a new r9 280x to crossfire with my other card. One is an ASUS r9 280x Matrix and the other is a Sapphire r9 280x. I've uninstalled and installed drivers, but I'm never given the option to crossfire in the catalyst centre. I've also tried swapping the cards and the XFire bridge.

Solution
ensure all pcie power cables are firmly connected to the gpu's (asus matrix 2x6+2pin), (sapphire 1x6+2/1x6)
your mobo supports crossfire but not in an optimal mode.

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z97K/specifications/

1 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 mode, gray)
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (max at x4 mode, black) *1

*1: The PCIe x1_1, PCIe x1_2 slots share bandwidth with PCIe x16_2. The PCIe x16_2 slot runs at x2 mode as default. Please check BIOS for more configuration

go into bios and make PCIex16_2 run at 4x mode (you cannot have any other pcie slot occupied other than these with the gpu's)

optimal would be both 280x running at x8 mode or above!
