I purchased a used computer from a friend who moved away a month ago and I booted it up today and for the first hour it worked great. I added my graphics card, booted, still fine. I then realized the hard drive in the computer had only 120GB of storage and decided to add my spare 500GB Seagate HDD from a computer that the motherboard went kaput on. Plugged it in and tried to boot the computer and sent me to the "Start Windows Normally" or repair windows. I selected the first one and it sent me back to the Compaq logo and every time I did this it did the same thing. I started windows repair and it is still on "Attempting to repair windows"
What did I do wrong and how long should windows repair take on this? I removed the 500GB HDD and it still happens.

It can take a while... even days. Check the answers microsoft thread to get an idea. If you want to speed the repair up, stop it with the power button pressed 10 seconds, and remove the 500GB Seagate, next see if it boots right up, and if not run the Windows Startup Repair... it shouldn't take to long. After that, if you want to use your 500Gb Seagate, format it first or delete the damaged OS all via USB, or switch hard drives, the 500GB Seagate only on the computer and run the Startup Repair on it.. should not take to long either... or boot the computer to a Hiren's Boot CD and run virus and malware scans, or an online antivirus, Hirens should also include a bootloader repair tool, and several hard disk repair tools to try and recover...

You could also download a Live CD Antivirus iso from any of the top free antivirus websites.
