How to understand the AMD Graphics card line-up

This question is simply asking how do i understand the time period these cards came out, what they were designed for, and how to know which ones are faster/better than others in a series.
I'm asking this question because I want to be an informed buyer and be able to keep track of all the graphics cards worth buying out there.

I already know how the NVidea system works and maybe you could help me out by relating the Nvidea system to the AMD system.

For example.
Time period: 700 series= newest, 1 year 600 series= roughly 2 years ago etc.

What they were designed for: GT= general everyday use, 10-40 GTX= High end performance 50-90

As for the cards themselves.
Currently the newest lineup is the Rx xxx series.
R5 is for daily, low power usage.
R7 is the entry level lineup.
R9 is the mid range to high end gaming.

There are several deviations within each lineup. Those are fairly easy to understand.
R9 270, R9 270X, R9 280, R9 280X, R9 290, R9 290X, R9 295x2.
As the number increases the performance does as well. The "X" models are faster versions of the base cards, comparable to the old lineup, (7850 vs 7870)
If you need me to I can go into the previous lineups as well, which are a few years old at this point.

Basically for AMD, the 6000 series is like the 600 series. Some of the 6000 cards are better than the 7000 series. And some of the 7000 series is like the 700 series. I would imagine it is the same because AMD and Nvidia both compete to beat each other.
